Optical map showing the large-scale distribution of galaxies in a region of sky near the south galactic pole. The image, which has been coloured blue, shows the clumpy nature of the universe. On scales of tens of millions of light years, galaxies seem to dot the surfaces of giant inter- connected bubbles surrounding immense voids. The map covers 4,300 square degrees, or about 10% of the sky, & shows the distribution of some two million galaxies. Each pixel represents a patch of sky 8 arc minutes on a side; pixels are black where there are no galaxies, bright blue where there are more than 20 & darker blue elsewhere.
