Castellar de la Frontera, Cadiz Province, Andalusia, southern Spain. Entrance to the Villa Fortaleza, or fortified town. The fortress dates from the 10th century with its present form evolving during the 13th and 14th centuries. Castellar is one of several Andalusian frontier (de la frontera) towns which saw continual battles between Christian and Muslim armies during the centuries long reconquest of Spain. The Arab presence in the country lasted 781 years, from 711 to 1492.
