View NW of two of the yew trees (Trees 3 on L, Tree 4 on R) in the churchyard of St Mary Magdalene, Ashford Carbonel Parish, Shropshire, England, UK. There were 5 significant yews in the churchyard, at least two of them very ancient (1 & 4) but Tree 1 on the N side of the church was felled in November 2011. It had a girth of over 21ft & is considered to have been over 2,000 years old suggesting there was a Saxon structure or pre-Christian holy place here before the Norman church was founded in the C12th. The nave & chancel were extended in the C13th, the timber-framed bell turret with weatherboarding & pyramidal roof was added to the W end in the C15th. The church has sandstone rubble walls with ashlar dressings, stone roof tiles & stone coped gables. The south porch is C19th. The church was restored in 1883 & is a Grade II* Listed Building. Ashford Carbonel is the Parish, Ashford Carbonell the village.
