October 1934 image of the first of Germany's 'Pocket Battleships', the DEUTSCHLAND in the Firth of Forth, Scotland on training maneuvers and visiting Edinburgh on an official state visit. Its sister ships were the Admiral Scheer and Admiral Graf Spee, a series of three Panzerschiffe (armored ships) or heavily armed cruisers, built by the Reichsmarine, officially in accordance with restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles, though they violated the weight limit. They used welded construction and were propelled by diesel.
