Infected toes in a 79-year-old male patient with type 1 diabetes mellitus. The infection occurred as a result of a long haul flight in tight footwear. Diabetics are more susceptible to developing infections, as high blood sugar levels can weaken immune system defences. Diabetes can cause nerve damage and reduced blood flow in the extremities, which also increases the body's vulnerability to infection.
