Castle Keep and south-west wall. Historic Loch Leven Castle near Kinross, Scotland.

Castle Keep and defensive south-west outer wall. Historic Loch Leven Castle near Kinross, Scotland. The castle, also known as Lochleven, is located on a small island in the Loch Leven. Tourists can visit the island by boat during Spring to Autumn. It is a very significant castle in Scottish history. It was royal castle from 1257. Captured by the English, and taken back by William Wallace. Its was besieged unsuccessfully by the English in 1301. Robert the Bruce visited the castle. Mary Queen of Scots was held prisoner at the castle for a year from 1567 before her escape. It was while imprisoned that she suffered a miscarriage and was forced to abdicate in favour of her son, James VI. By the 18th century, the castle was a ruin and ownership transferred from the Bruce to the Graham family. In the 19th century, the ownership passed to the Montgomery family who owned Kinross House on the opposite shore overlooking the castle. The island upon which it sits is larger today than in the fifteenth century, due to Victorian age draining of the some of the surrounding loch.
