Kufa Clusia sp. seed capsules Kaieteur National Park Guiana Shield Guyana South America October

Clusia (family Clusiaceae) comprises of 140-150 species with evergreen foliage. Native to tropical and subtropical America. Some species start life as epiphytes before developing roots that descend to the ground and eventually strangle the host, in a similar way to strangler figs. They grow as vines, shrubs or trees. The leaves are opposite, 5-20 cm long and 5-10 cm broad, with a leathery texture and an entire margin. The flowers are white to greenish-white, yellow or pink, with 4-9 petals. The fruit is a leathery capsule, seeds fleshy-coated, red. ID credit Carol L. Kelloff, Department of Botany MRC166 Smithsonian Institution, NMNH Box 37012 10th & Constitution Ave, NW
