Dystrophic toe nails in a 53-year-old man. Dystrophy is a term for impaired growth of a tissue or an organ. This may be caused by a disease, or as a side-effect of drugs used to treat a disease. Here, the condition has lasted six years, and it is thought to have been caused by the use of fingernails to open crates while at work as a butcher. The condition has also affected the toe nails.
