Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Candida albicans yeast (blue) and extracellular matrix (ECM, purple). ECM is found around multicellular aggregates of yeast cells, such as biofilms. It contains polysaccharides and proteins and helps the yeast adhere to surfaces and contributes to antifungal resistance. Candida albicans is a cause of thrush (candidiasis).
