A boy holds a candle as he prays in Oaxaca's Metropolitan Cathedral in Mexico, August 30, 2008. The cathedral was built by the Spanish in 1553 and renovated in 1730 after an earthquake. The Spanish founded the city Oaxaca in 1521, which they named Antequera. They built it over an Aztec military fort which the Aztec's built in 1496 after conquering the Mixtec and Zapotec kingdoms. The name Oaxaca is derived from the Nahuatl word, Huayacac which translates as The Place of the Seed, referring to a tree commonly found in Oaxaca. The city has one of Mexico's most important historic Spanish colonial areas.
