NEW YORK. The Church of the Transfiguration in Lower Midtown. One East 29th Street, between 5th Avenue and Madison Avenue. Telephone 212-684-6770. (12:30 to 13:00 Tue concerts). Since that Sunday in October 1848 when the first Mass was celebrated, many things have changed in this small Anglican church. In 1870, Joseph Jefferson wanted to make some arrangements at the funeral of his friend, who was an actor and Catholic priest left him. Then he commented "there is a little church around the corner that does those things."
