Seemingly in prime condition yet another wildlife roadkill victim to add to the mounting Tasmanian statistics. Reports reveal that the number of wild animals killed annually on Tasmanian roads could equate to an unbelievable figure approaching 500 000. That is almost one per head of this Australian State's population, which in 2017 was almost 520 000.


Possums There are 23 species of possum in Australia. There are three major families; Ringtail possums (Petauridae) Brushtail possums (Phalangeridae) Pygmy possums (Burramyidae). Tasmania has five species of possum; Family (Petauridae); Common Ringtail Possum (Pseudocheirus0 Sugar Glider (Petaurus) Family (Phalangeridae) Brushtailed Possum (Trichosurus vulpecular) Family (Burramyidae). Eastern pygmy possum Cercartetus nanus Little pygmy possum Cercartetus lepidus The Common Brushtail possum as the name indicates are the most common of the possums in Tasmania as they have adapted to urban lifestyle extremely Possums tend to lead a solitary life although in areas where shelter is little shelter and their numbers are high then they may share places to sleep. The Common Brushtail possums are very adept at climbing with their sharp claws; a hand-like back foot for grasping, and a strong flexible prehensile tail for curling around branches. Being nocturnal they venture out at dusk to feed where in Tasmania; possums also spend a considerable amount of time on the ground seeking out food. Possums are protected by law and require a permit to be trapped or killed. However, overall all is not well regard the conservation of Tasmania's fauna as Tasmania finds itself in the unenviable position of being considered the 'Roadkill' capital of the world. With more animals being killed per kilometer than anywhere else in the world
