Fig. 7. 1, P. tmei; 2, P. biillatits Coast region of the United States (southern Oregon into Baja California) eastward to extreme western Oklahoma and southward into the State of Oaxaca, Mexico (Fig. 7). The range of difficilis extends from northern Colorado southward into Oaxaca (Fig. 8). The southern limits of the two species are essentially identical. Both species have differentiated geographically; fourteen races of truei and eight of difficilis are currently recognized. The available evidence indicates that the two species do not interbreed under natural conditions. Cross-breeding of examples of their northern populations has been obtained in the laboratory, however. The male hybrids are sterile while females are not (Dice and Liebe, 1937). While the species triiei seems to be a clear-cut case of a series of geographically intergrading populations, the situation with respect to difficilis is not so clear. Osgood (1909) sviggested that.
