Too much cannot be said in praise of this beautiful summer-flowering annual, from two to three feet in height, with green sub-digitate leaves and leafy stercs, terminating in large panicled racemes of rich violet or purple crimson close-petalled flowers, with white centre, each from one to one and a half inches m width, and partially clipped; commences to bloom when about six inches high, and continues to yield a succession of its numerous attractive flowers throughout the summer and autumn, till hard frost, forming an elegant object for groups or beds. 76 Callirlioe Pedata. Rich violet-purple, with white eye, from X. America. 2 f. 77 Verticillata. A pretty creeper; flowers like C. Pedata, but doable the size, CALLIOPSIS, or COREOPSIS. Nat. Ord., Compositce. This genus is amongst the most showy, free-flowering, and beautiful of hardy annuals. The tall varieties are very effective in mixed borders and fronts of slu-ub- beries; and the dwarf kinds, from their close, compact habit of growth, make fine bedding-plants, and are valuable for edgings; wliile the different varieties make very pretty ribbons.
