Large Blood Cockle Clam lying on the sand in the Gulf of Mexico


Anadara granosa is a species of ark clam known as the blood cockle due to the red haemoglobin liquid inside that you can see hanging out of the shell in this photo. During low tide, when the clam becomes exposed to the air, the clam comes out of the shell to push itself along the exposed sand Digital image was shot in color with natural light on a sand bar in the Gulf of Mexico just off the small island chain in Northwestern Florida known as the Cedar Keys.
