Barbary Ground Squirrel (Atlantoxerus getulus) , Fuerteventura, Canary Islands


The Barbary Ground Squirrel (Atlantoxerus getulus) is the only species belonging to the genus Atlantoxerus. This is the only species of squirrel that is located north of the Sahara Desert in Africa. It inhabits Morocco and Algeria, countries on the north-western coast of Africa, and in addition can be found on the island of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, where it was introduced in 1971.
