Pieve di Coriano ( Mantua)


Pieve di Coriano is a frazione of Borgo Mantovano in the Province of Mantua in the Italian region Lombardy, located about 160 kilometres (99 mi) southeast of Milan and about 30 kilometres (19 mi) southeast of church of Pieve was built in 1082, at the behest of Matilde di Canossa. The very tall bell tower was erected from 1930 to 1934. The construction rests on an ancient base found during the excavations. For some there stood the tower of the castle of Matilde, for others it was the site of the ancient Baptistery of the Pieve. On 27 January 2007 the Giovanni Paolo II oratory was inaugurated, located in Piazza Aldo Moro, near the church. Following the earthquake of 20 and 29 May 2012 in the church, they were severely damaged five times, currently secured. On December 8, 2012, on the occasion of the Immaculate Conception, after the restoration of the vaults damaged by the May earthquake, the church was reopened.
