A colorful fresco uncovered in Pompeii, shows a dancing Maenad, a follower of Dionysus, the god of wine.


Pompeii was a flourishing seaport town and a wealthy resort the south of Rome, near Naples, in the first century In August 79, , the nearby volcano Mt. Vesuvius erupted and destroyed and buried the town. Extensive excavations were carried on in the late 1800s and also in the early 1900s. Many colorful frescoes were uncovered, including this one of a dancing Maenad, follower of Dionysus, the god of wine. The figure is shown with a tambourine.
