Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major, ssp. canariensis), Tenerife, Canary Islands

This race of the Great Spotted Woodpecker (Dendrocopos major ssp. canariensis) lives in the Canary Islands, where it is a resident bird restricted to the pine forests. It differs from the nominal race that inhabits Europe in having underparts which are tinged brownish-greyish, as can be seen in this photograph. This bird was attracted to water drops falling from a camping site tap, and is drinking from it.
