Zeiss Universal compound microscope, used extensively in the 1980's in many professional laboratories worldwide.

Although not evident from the outside, the complex internal light path uses a series of lenses, mirrors, and prisms which work together to route the light through an intricate pathway throughout the body of the microscope. Available with both transmitted and reflected light illumination globes, this microscope is equipped with a tungsten-halogen (transmitted) lamp, in addition to a mercury arc bulb for fluorescence and other reflected light applications. Objectives, eyepieces, and other glass lens elements are typical of the Zeiss designs, and the mechanical stage and substage condenser operate in a manner similar to that of other microscopes of the period.
