An example of the Alder Sawfly larva, Eriocampa ovata, photographed on an alder leaf, Alnus glutinosa. The larva was found on the banks of the Dorset Stour river near the town of Gillingham in early August. The larva is camouflaged with a white substance in its early stages to look like a bird dropping. In its final stage the substance disappears the larva is revealed to be green.
