Foumier^ makes a variety latifolia of this species {Setaria geniculata), based on 2639 Bourgeau and 5723 Galeotti, both of which are repre- sented in the Gray Herbarium. In these specimens none of the leaves exceed 8 mm. (4 lines) in width. In the original descrip- tion the leaves are described as "longues, larges du trois d, quarire lignes, planes, glabres," etc. In other sijecimens cited by Fournier as representing the type 350 Lieb- mannand Ghiesbreght 1842, rep- resented in the United States National Herbarium, the plants are depauperate, with narrow leaves, not exceeding 6 mm. wide, and shorter, narrower spikes. In Jaquin'^ the description and plate represent the type as having broad leaves and thick, elongated spikes; hence it would seem that Fournier had a wrong idea of the type, which is best represented by his variety latifolia. Closely related to var. geniculata. Mexico. Specimens examined.—Mexico: Oaxaca, 342 Conzatti & Gonzalez 1897; Coahyila, 431 Pringle 1885; Durango, 378, 381,471 Pahner 1896. 3.
