Dom Henrique of Portugal, Duke of Viseu, more commonly known as Prince Henry the Navigator, was the third child of King John I of Portugal and an important figure in the early days of the Portuguese Empire. He sponsored much of the early European exploration and maritime trade with other continents, particularly Africa. He is regarded by many as the primary initiator of the 'Age of Discovery'.
