Balchik is an ancient small seaside town in northern Bulgaria which combines the romance of its steep streets with the beauty of the sea sometimes known as the white town and admired by the roman poet Ovid. Balchik has preserved traces of many cultures. for a while it was part of Romania and the most famous building is the summer palace of the roumainian queen Maria alexandrine Victoria of Edinburgh (1875-1938). the botanical gardens are among the largest in Europe designed as a project of the Swiss garden designer Jules janine once gardener to the emperor Nicholas ii of Russia
