Colorful patterns in the algea and bacteria layers of the Grand Prismatic Spring, Yellowstone National Park

The Grand Prismatic Spring is approximately 110 meter in diameter and is 50 meter deep. The spring discharges an estimated 2000 liter of 70 °C water per minute. The vivid colors in the spring are the result of microbial mats around the edges of the mineral-rich water. The mats produce colors ranging from green to red predominantly determined by the temperature.
