Henry Purcell (1659–1695), portrait by or after John Closterman, oil on canvas, 1695. Purcell was a 17th century English composer who was appointed organist of Westminster Abbey in 1679 and of the Chapel Royal in 1682. Amongst other pieces, he composed religious anthems, music for plays and the famous "Dido and Aeneas", one of the first English operas.
