Apparently corresponding tothe three flank stripes so often seen in Burchell zebras, there are in the hybrid three stripes in front of the stifle, which first run upwards and then arch backwards to endbelow the root of the tail (Fig. 9). Between the last verticalstripe and the great flank stripe are three ill-defined. ilomulus : one year old. oblique stripes. In the triangular space between the firstoblique stripe and the ninth vertical stripe are numerousnarrow indistinct lines, some of which proceed towardsthe ventral band, while others join the oblique line with these nearly transverse stripes there were atbirth numerous spots arranged in nearly transverse rowsover the loins and rump. Now that the hybrid is over a ZEBRA-HORSE HYBRIDS. year old (Fig-. 11) most of the spots have united to formsomewhat zigzag narrow bands, almost identical in theirdirection with the narrow stripes over the hind quarters ofthe Somali zebra. On the left side the blending of thespots has advanced further than on the right. Countingfrom the shoulder stripe to the root of the tail, there areforty-three stripes in the hybrid,—about the same numberas in the Somali zebra; in Matopo there are only fivetransverse stripes behind the shoulder stripe (Fig. 7). Itseems to me the blending of the spots over the hindqu
