Gatehouse, Jamaica Estates, Queens, New York

The Gatehouse to Jamaica Estates was designed by John J. Petit of Kirby, Petit & Green and built in 1908. The garden community was designed by landscape architect Charles W. Leavitt. As an antidote to 19th-century industrial urban districts, he designed an English garden suburb to feature single-family houses along winding streets. The inspiration was Tuxedo Park in Orange County.
