Sea grass, Posidonia oceanica, in the Mediterranean Sea, Malta. This picture was taken in Cirkewwa, Malta.

Sea grasses are the only flowering plant that spend their entire life in the sea. Posidonia oceanica is a species of sea grass that is endemic to the Mediterranean Sea and enjoys special legal protection under EU law. Posidonia meadows provide habitat for many marine species and reduce bottom erosion as they stabilize the ground through their root system. They also serve as nursery ground for many fish species.
