MODEL RELEASED. Heart bypass surgery. Surgeon attaching a healthy mammary artery to a diseased coronary artery during coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) surgery. This re-routes the blood flow, bypassing the blocked coronary artery. A heart positioner (white and blue) is holding the heart in a position that allows the surgeons maximum access to the diseased artery. This device allows surgery to take place while the heart is still beating, leading to fewer complications than when using a heart-lung machine. Blood vessels can become blocked by the build-up of fatty plaques, known as atherosclerosis. This reduces blood flow to the areas served by the vessel and can lead to heart pain (angina) or a heart attack (myocardial infarction).
