Edward Everett, American politician, 1860


Edward Everett by William Momberger. Edward Everett (1794-1865), ran for vice-president under the banner of the Constitutional Union party on the ticket with John Bell in 1860. Everett had been president of Harvard, 1846-1849. A famous orator, Everett raised more than $100,000 to purchase Washington's home of Mount Vernon by giving lectures across the United States. In 1860 he wrote the entry on Washington for the Encyclopaedia Britannica.
