A Wayuu Piachi or Healer follower of María Lionza religion, holds postcards of Guaicaipuro, Maria Lionza, Negro Felipe and Dr. Jose Gregorio Hernandez. The central figure in one of the most widespread indigenous religions in certain parts of Colombia and Venezuela, very similar in most aspects to Santeria. The religion is a blend of African, indigenous, and Catholic beliefs. The term “cult of María Lionza” refers to a multiplicity of purification, divination, healing and initiation rituals in which a medium is possessed by the spirit of Maria Lionza or of other divinities of her pantheon.
