An early portrait of W T Tilden , Lawn Tennis Champion --- William Tatem Tilden II ( 1893 – 1953), nicknamed "Big Bill," was an American tennis player. Tilden was the world Number One player for six years from 1920 -1925. He was the first American to win Wimbledon (1920) , won 14 major singles, 10 Grand Slams , won a World Hard Court Championship and 7 Championships titles. He spent time in jail and/or on probation (twice) on charges of for soliciting an under-age male
