Crossing the Taramakau, painting by Nicholas Chevalier, completed in England in 1876 after his return from New Zealand. The Taramakau is a famous river on the West Coast of the South Island, which Chevalier's party crossed near its source. Further downstream the river claimed many lives during the gold rush era.
