Grey Squirrel with acorns in mouth in Autumn

landscape format image of Grey Squirrel in habitat in the process of collecting acorns for winter Grey Squirrels, originally native to north america were introduced to the uk in the late 19th century. Their diet consists of acorns, flowers, nuts, fruit, acorns and cereals. Surplus food collected is hoarded and cached in stores typically 1-2 inches (2-5cm) under the soil surface. Primarily associated with parks, gardens and deciduous woodlands, they do not compete with native UK Red Squirrels which frequent conifer woods, but do carry and have immunity to a virus which is often fatal to Red Squirrels.
