Abstract Stone

Lichens are composite organisms consisting of a symbiotic association of a fungus, the mycobiont, with a photosynthetic partner and the photobiont or phycobiont. The morphology, physiology and biochemistry of lichens are very different from those of the isolated fungus and alga in culture. Lichens occur in some of the most extreme environments on Earth where man dare not tread, (who would desire walking across a Toxic slag heap) however they are also abundant for all to see on leaves and branches in rain forests and temperate woodland, on bare rock in the wild, on man made walls and gravestones and also on exposed soil surfaces.
