By its side were Cromwellsguards, and in the coach sat his son Richard, togetherwith the Earl of Warwick, Whitelocke, Lisle, andMountagu, with their drawn swords.^ And, thoughthey failed to see it thus, this was symbolical, forit was the sword which had brought Cromwell to hispresent estate, and it was the sword by which thesemen had compassed his crowning. All signs ofrepublicanism were swept away, and a new monarchy,under another name, arose to rule England. Fromthat time Edward Mountagu was unconsciously aRoyalist. He was soon called upon to serve the new debates upon kingship, and the splendour of theProtectors inauguration, had not diverted Cromwellsmind from foreign politics.
