Reign of Charles IV of Spain. Manuel Godoy ordered the arrest of Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos (1744-1811) on 13 March 1801, and his banishment to Majorca. First to the Carthusian Monastery of Valldemossa, where he was under the care of the monks until 1802, and then to the military prison of Bellver Castle (1802-1808). After the fall of Godoy during the Mutiny of Aranjuez, Jovellanos was freed on 6 April 1808 from the Bellver Castle prison. Engraving.
