Rhode Island, USA. This image was created using Landsat Orthorectified ETM Pan-Sharpened data, and draped with National Elevation Dataset (NED) data. The process of orthorectification removes erroneous image displacements caused by the interaction between terrain relief or local elevation changes and sensor orientation variations. The orthorectification process results in remotely sensed image products that possess both the image-based information of the original satellite data and the geometric information of a geodetically accurate map. The National Elevation Dataset (NED) is a seamless raster product derived primarily from USGS 30-meter Digital Elevation Models (DEMs), along with higher resolution data where available.
