Alter Number 1 on the Patio de los Altares, the Archeological Excavations at the Great Pyramid of Cholula, Mexico

Alter Number 1 on the Patio de los Altares, the Archeological Excavations at the Great Pyramid of Cholula, Mexico. Altar One is a monument formed by two stone slabs one of which is horizontal and the other vertical. In reality this results in a stela embedded into an altar. The stela is decorated in low relief with intertwined hooks in the shape of a frieze, which is repeated on the sides of the alter. Located on the south side of the Great Pyramid of Cholula this group is contemporary with the diverse structures which are found inside the great base. Like these it shows at least six construction stages with the original floor located approximately 9 metres below ground level.
