Nootka Lupin (Lupinus nootkatensis) flower spikes close-up invasive species introduced from America to Southern Iceland Europe

Lupinus nootkatensis (Nootka lupin) is native to North America: Aleutian Islands, Alaska from the Arctic coast southwards to Queen Charlotte Island and Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada (Dunn and Gillett 1966). It was grown as popular garden plant (Karlsson 1981, Fremstad and Elven 2004) in England since 1795. England is probably the original source of seeds of the species in Scandinavian countries. Originally it has been used there to combat erosion and as ornamental plant. In Iceland it naturalized throughout the lowlands. It grows unhindered and competes with native flora.
