Professional Coconut Palm Tree Climber in Goan village. An extremely hazardous occupation with no safety devices. Salcete, Goa.

Villages in South Goa are full of verdant tropical growth. Coconut plantations are very important economic assets. The slender leaning palm trees rise to a height of 26 metres. Coconut tree climbing is mostly a hereditary occupation performed by the Kunbi and Shudra castes. It is an extremely hazardous occupation with no safety devices used. Men cut notches in the side of the palm trees to help them climb. Besides plucking coconuts the climber also collects sap in earthen pots which is then left to ferment. Liquor distilled from the coconut palm called feni is potent and cheap. Salcete Konkan Coast Goa India
