The fruit is a red aggregate drupe, sometimes called arbutus-berry, with a rough surface, maturing in 12 months at the same time as the next flowering. The fruit is edible, though many people find it bland and mealy. It is usually only eaten by birds, though it is used to make jams and liqueurs.
