Nanoporous silica arrays. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of nanoporous silica crystals, known as silica arrays. Within these crystals are pores that can be manipulated during formation to range in size from 2 to 50 nanometres in diameter. The arrays can be used for ultrafiltration, drug delivery and catalysts in chemical reactions. Magnification: x6600 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
