Illustration of US physicist David J. Wineland (born 1944). Wineland is best known for his work in quantum optics, the study of the fundamental interactions between light and matter, and its application in quantum computing. Wineland was awarded the 2012 Nobel Prize in Physics for experimental work that trapped ions (charged atoms), allowing their quantum states to be measured. The prize was jointly awarded with the French physicist Serge Haroche.
