Alligator hunting a fish, coloured X-ray. The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) is a large reptile that inhabits freshwater swamps, lakes and bays in the south-eastern USA and the surrounding islands. It spends much of the day basking by the banks of rivers and lakes. It hunts by day and night, taking turtles, snakes, fish and mammals. It averages around three metres in length.
