Goddard rocket research. Standing in front of a rocket in its launch tower are (left to right): machinist Albert Kisk; philanthropist Harry F. Guggenheim (1890-1971); rocket scientist Robert H. Goddard (1882-1945); pilot Charles A. Lindbergh (1902-1974); and machinist Nils T. Ljungquist. Lindbergh, an advocate for Goddard and his research, helped secure a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation in 1930. Goddard, a pioneer of rocketry, received little recognition during his lifetime. His achievements were only recognised after his death with the dawn of the Space Age. Photographed on 23 September 1935, in Roswell, New Mexico, USA.
