Someyears ago a serious outbreak of yellow fever occurredupon ^the isthmus, but improving hygienic measuresappear to have prevented a recurrence of this, and tohave diminished the almost inevitable malaria. Thereare other short lines of railway in the state. The city of Oaxaca is handsome and interesting, andenjoys a temperate climate due to its elevation of morethan 5,000 feet above sea-level. It justly prides itselfupon having produced some of Mexicos famous men,including Juarez and Porfirio NATURAL HESOMRCES 307 Chiapas is the southernmost of the Mexican states—the last upon the Pacific, its eastern boundary formingthe frontier with the neighbouring Republic of Guate-mala. Following out the general structure of Mexicoslittoral, the Sierra Madrc parallels the Pacific Ocean here,leaving a narrow coast strip, but with a lack of goodports and navigable rivers. On the northern side, how-ever, the Atlantic watershed, the state is traversed bynavigable streams which flow to the Gulf of Campeche,notably the affluents of the Grijalva and Usumacinta,traversing the neighbouring State of Tabasco. The country is generally high and healthy, of anundulating and picturesque character, and is one of thebest-watered states of the Republic.
