Caricatures of the French National Assembly
During the French Revolution, which began in 1789, English caricaturist James Gillray made many cariactures about events in France. These two were published in 1791 and show the National Assembly Petrified (top) with the words "the king is escaped" and the National Assembly Revivified (bottom) with the words "aha the king is retaken."
