Illustration of Parzival, 13th-century epic poem about Arthurian knight Parzival (left) and his quest for Holy Grail

This frame is the last illustration in the late 14th century hand-colored Heidelberg illustrations of Parzival, that was written by Wolfram von Eschenbach. With Parzival is Amfortas, the King of the Grail Knights. Wolfram von Eschenbach (c. 1170 - c. 1220) was a German knight and poet. He is considered one of the best epic poets at the time. He also wrote lyric poetry and, much like a troubadour, wrote love poetry in a courtly love fashion in German during the Middle Ages. The 19th-century German composer Richard Wagner based his three-act opera Parsifal on Parzival. The knight's name was Percival.
